Green Mountain College History and Information

Green Mountain College was founded by the Troy Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1834 as a school for men and women. We’ve gone through quite a bit of change through the years, including becoming a two-year college for women only during World War II and back again as a four year, co-ed school years later.

What has never changed is our dedication to our students, and turning out individuals that are committed to making a difference. In 1995, Green Mountain College was one of the first colleges in the country to embrace an environmental mission. We have kept this focus throughout the years with many successes, including achieving carbon neutrality in 2011. We are innovators in Green Business Education and have been recognized many times for our mission, including being ranked the #1 and #2 green school by Sierra Magazine in 2010 and 2011.

Our online Green MBA program has been offered since 2006. We have a committed and enthusiastic faculty that is very experienced in both the corporate world and online instruction.  Our students can expect a rich, meaningful learning experience that will prepare them in all areas of business (finance, marketing, accounting, economics) with sustainability lessons woven throughout.  Graduates will be armed to make the case in their corporation, or in their own venture, that sustainability is not just good for the earth, but good for business.
